Winter Weather Preparedness, and Emergency Contacts

The City of Brownwood Emergency Management Team will monitor the impact of  winter weather closely and direct residents to resources available.

City Facilities:

In the event of severe weather, any changes in operations, closures, and delays in sanitation pickup will be posted here.


Thursday, January 29th

All non-emergency facilities, with the exception of the Brownwood Senior Citizen Center, will reopen on Thursday, January 29th. Residential trash collection will resume on normal route schedule. 

Brownwood Senior Citizens Center will only be delivering home delivery meals and not be serving in-person congregate meals.

As temperatures start to climb, frozen pipes can thaw and burst, which means water damage can show up fast. If you discover a busted pipe:

-Shut off your water if you can
-If you have a water leak and need assistance turning your water off please call 325.646.6000.
-City of Brownwood water and sewer emergencies may be reported to 325.646.6000 as this line is answered 24/7.

Wednesday, January 28th

All non-emergency facilities, including City Hall, will be closed on Wednesday, January 28th. Emergency services will continue to operate as normal including Fire, Police, and Dispatch.

Due to continued freezing temperatures and road conditions the City of Brownwood will be adapting its hours of operation. The following adjustments are announced for Wednesday, January 28th.

  • Emergency services will continue to operate as normal including Fire, Police, and Dispatch.
  • All non-emergency facilities, including City Hall, will be closed Wednesday, January 28th.  
  • The Senior Citizens Center will be closed and not serve congregant meals. Homebound residents in need have been contacted, and arrangements are being made.  
  • The Brownwood Regional Landfill will have limited access to large commercial clients by scheduled appointment, after 10 am. Brownwood Recycling Center will remain closed. 
  • Residential trash collections will resume on Thursday, January 29th

Tuesday, January 27th

All non-emergency facilities, including City Hall, will be closed on Tuesday, January 27th. Emergency services will continue to operate as normal including Fire, Police, and Dispatch.

Due to continued freezing temperatures and road conditions the City of Brownwood will be adapting its hours of operation. The following adjustments are announced for Tuesday, January 27th.

  • Emergency services will continue to operate as normal including Fire, Police, and Dispatch.
  • All non-emergency facilities, including City Hall, will be closed Tuesday, January 27th.  
  • The regularly called City Council Meeting at 9:00 am will be cancelled. Items will be moved to the next regularly City Council meeting on Feb 10, 2026. 
  • The Senior Citizens Center will be closed and not serve congregant meals. Homebound residents in need have been contacted, and arrangements are being made.  
  • The Brownwood Regional Landfill will have limited access to large commercial clients by scheduled appointment, after 10 am. Brownwood Recycling Center will remain closed. 
  • Sanitation will not collect routes on Tuesday, January 27th, trash collections will resume, pending conditions, on Wednesday, January 28th.

Monday, January 26th

  • Emergency services will continue to operate as normal including Fire, Police, and Dispatch.
  • All non-emergency facilities, including City Hall, will be closed on Monday, January 26th 
  • The Senior Citizens Center will be closed, and not serve congregant meals. Homebound residents received a shelf stable meal on Friday’s delivery. 
  • Residential sanitation route will not be collected on Monday, Jan 26th. Pending conditions, normal service will resume Tuesday, Jan 27th.

Saturday, January 24th 

  • Brownwood Senior Citizen Center proactively delivered an extra shelf stable meal on Friday to home bound residents should there be changes in delivery schedule on Monday, January 26. 
  • The Martin and Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum and Visitor Center will be closed Saturday, January 24, 2026. 
  • The Brownwood Regional Landfill and Sanitation will not open or pick up commercial route on Saturday, January 24, 2026 and will resume on Monday, January 26 pending weather.

Water and Sewer Emergencies:

City of Brownwood water and sewer emergencies may be reported to 325-646-6000 as this line is answered 24/7. 

Water Leaks and Assistance Information:

City of Brownwood Utility Crews will be proactively responding to residential water leaks. If you have a water leak and need assistance turning your water off please call 325.646.6000. A resident or member of the household must make this service request. 

Travel precautions:

TxDOT advises drivers to use caution when driving over bridges and overpasses, and remember a vehicle needs more distance to stop on a slick roadway. Do not apply the brakes suddenly, do not use cruise control, and drive with care when road conditions are affected by cold weather. You can monitor road conditions by visiting drivetexas.org

Street Closure Updates:

Dependent on condition the City of Brownwood Street Crews will will sand/salt bridges and signalized intersections, and emergency building roads (fire stations, hospital, law enforcement center, etc.).

Electricity:

Oncor is the electricity provider in the City of Brownwood. Report power outages through Oncor’s Storm Center website (https://stormcenter.oncor.com/), by calling 888-313-4747 or texting OUT to 66267 if you have registered for My Oncor Alerts. To register for My Oncor Alerts, text REG to 66267. 


Emergency shelter options:

Overnight sheltering and a warming center will be available or if there is a large-scale power outage, the City will open a warming shelter.

o Keep warm, stay inside if possible.

o If you need to go out, dress in layers and wear hats, gloves and an appropriate coat.

o Avoid overexertion, as cold weather puts added strain on your body.

o Observe heater safety: never place a space heater on top of furniture or near water; keep heat sources at least three (3) feet away from furniture and drapes.

o Never leave children unattended near a space heater.

o Protect yourself from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning by installing a battery-operated CO detector and never using generators, grills, camp stoves, or similar devices indoors.
